Pregnancy

From hearing the first heartbeat and seeing the first ultrasound to meeting your newborn – Women’s Health Advantage provides safe and compassionate care throughout your whole pregnancy.

Natural birth, planned deliveries – we are here to accommodate the preferences and needs for your family in the safest way possible. Our OB-GYNs always strive to provide the best care for you and your baby.

We want the best for you and your baby, and we are here to accommodate your preferences in the safest way possible. We offer a full range of pregnancy services—including the option to receive all your tests at our offices—from the initial pregnancy test all the way to your baby's delivery. As an independent group, we partner with Dupont Hospital and Lutheran Hospital as options for your delivery.

We strive to provide you with the education, care and guidance you need during pregnancy to feel empowered to make the best informed decisions for you and your baby. In addition to personalized counseling from your WHA provider, we also partner with local hospital systems to connect you with their Birth Navigator services and prenatal classes.

Ultrasounds are used to monitor several aspects of your baby's health during pregnancy and screen for any potential issues, Two ultrasounds are routinely scheduled during the course of your pregnancy. Depending on certain situations, additional ultrasounds might also be recommended. We offer ultrasound services at each of our office locations for your convenience.

As early as 9 weeks into your pregnancy, you will have the option to have a simple, non-invasive blood test to learn your baby’s sex and other genetic information. There’s no risk to the baby, and it only requires a blood sample from you — with results returned in 1 to 2 weeks. Visit our Pregnancy Resources page to learn more about insurance coverage of this test.

Under certain circumstances, special fetal monitoring tests are necessary during pregnancy. Your provider will inform you if your baby requires additional testing such as a fetal non-stress test (NST) or biophysical profile (BPP), which is performed by ultrasound. These tests are available at each of our office locations for your convenience.

Patients with pregnancies determined to be high risk will be referred to Dr. Wheeler, our Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist who has been providing care in our community for over 20 years. We will coordinate your care between Dr. Wheeler and your regular provider. His office is located at our Dupont Road location.

If you have previously had a cesarean delivery, VBAC may be an option for your pregnancy. A successful VBAC has the benefits of no abdominal surgery, a shorter recovery period, a lower risk of infection and less blood loss. Certain conditions or risks may prevent a VBAC delivery. Our team will provide the highest quality of care to ensure a coordinated, informed plan for your delivery.

As we strive to provide individualized care, we recognize that different women have different expectations and preferences. Although deliveries do not always go “according to plan," we recognize that you may have certain preferences that you would like for us to know and discuss. We offer a sample Birth Preference List on our Pregnancy Resources page. Also, we can coordinate a consultation with a Birth Navigator to begin this dialogue.

The postpartum period can be exciting as well as emotional and exhausting. Our staff is here to guide you through what is normal and expected versus what should be evaluated for possible treatment.

Having a baby comes with many unexpected lifestyle changes, which means some women may experience postpartum depression after giving birth. If you experience any symptoms of postpartum depression, like difficulty making choices or severe sadness, our providers are here to help you through the process with several treatment options and resources.

Although breastfeeding is a natural process, it requires some learning and often some extra guidance along the way. If you run into challenges while attempting to breastfeed or need additional support, please call to speak with our staff. We also evaluate and treat conditions, such as mastitis and clogged milk ducts.

Choice of Delivery Location

As an independent group, we are able to team up with local hospitals including Dupont Hospital and Lutheran Hospital as delivery locations for our pregnant patients. We give you the freedom to choose the hospital that is right for you.

Please note that our physicians do NOT deliver at Parkview Regional Medical Center, Parkview Hospital Randallia, or Lutheran Downtown Hospital. We request that you do NOT go to these hospitals for any reason related to pregnancy or gynecologic care.

Dupont Hospital Laborist Program

Women’s Health Advantage physicians partner with Dupont Hospital to provide Laborist services at their facility 24/7.  Dupont Hospital has achieved the status of Perinatal Level III Centers within Indiana. This designation requires that at all times, an obstetrician and anesthesiologist are present at each hospital, as well as immediate availability of neonatalogists.

Hospitals with Perinatal Level III status are able to provide high-level and immediate care for many types of emergent and complicated obstetrical situations. They are also referral centers for smaller, community hospitals. While Northeast Indiana is fortunate to have two Level III Birthplaces (including Parkview Regional Medical Center), WHA physicians are proud to be the sole providers of this service at Dupont Hospital.

At Women’s Health Advantage, we give you the power to choose the hospital that is right for you and your delivery.

Perinatal Center

For women with high-risk pregnancies, our Perinatal Center offers the latest technologies to diagnose conditions that could affect a baby’s development. Our team also provides specialized care for women with complex medical issues that might impact their pregnancy. Our center provides the highest level of care, keeps moms and families informed and ensures a coordinated plan of care with the hospital team and other specialists.

To schedule an appointment at the Perinatal Center, please call 260-969-6881.
